spleen, liver, kidney

The kidney is the third most common organ after the spleen and liver to sustain damage as a result of blunt force trauma.  These injuries can be seen in car accidents - children often sustain kidney injury, falls, receiving a hard hit in the flank area of the body (between rib and hip) or a sudden stop after travelling at a high speed.

Most common symptom of kidney injury is blood in the urine, some seen by the naked eye and sometimes only under a microscope.

A quick dip

A simple dipstick urine test can detect microscopic hematuria - blood in the urine.

If kidney injury is suspect it is important that medical diagnostic imaging takes place on both kidneys.

Only then can a proper diagnosis be made for severity of the kidney injury.
