Hypertension: It's more just your heart

Hypertension

hypertension

Hypertension is a condition in which blood pressure is abnormally high. Over time, it damages the kidneys, brain, eyes, and heart.

Hypertension accelerates atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.

Secondary hypertension

Secondary hypertension (secondary high blood pressure) is high blood pressure caused by another medical condition.

Secondary hypertension differs from the usual type of high blood pressure often referred to simply as high blood pressure.

kidneys, arteries, heart

Secondary hypertension can be caused by conditions that affect your kidneys, arteries, heart or endocrine system. Secondary hypertension can also occur during pregnancy.

Proper treatment of secondary hypertension can often control both the underlying condition and the high blood pressure, which reduces the risk of serious complications — including heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.

Common among Seniors

More common in the elderly and usually has no symptoms but can be detected by a routine blood-pressure test.

Secondary hypertension, caused by another disorder (most often kidney disease or hormone imbalance), accounts for 10% of cases the, remaining 90% having no specific cause (essential hypertension).

Hypertension puts additional pressure on Kidneys

Normal

If the blood pressure is 120/80 (120 over 80), it means that; the systolic pressure is 120 and; the diastolic pressure is 80. 120/80 blood pressure can also be read as 120/80 mm Hg, or 120/80 millimetres of mercury.

However, these readings depend on age, sex, and body size. With chronic kidney disease, blood pressure is 'normal' if it stays below 130/80 mmHg.

Renin Hormone

Renin is a kidney blood pressure hormone. It helps control how much sodium and fluid is in the body and how relaxed the blood vessels are.
