Reflux in Children

Reflux

What is Reflux?

Reflux is when the urine goes back up from the bladder to the kidneys.  Often after a child has had a urinary tract infection Reflux may be diagnosed.

Issue with Valves

Reflux is caused by a defect of the valves between the ureters and the bladder.  Reflux can cause an infection spreading to the kidneys. This can be serious and may lead to kidney damage. In some cases, surgery is performed to correct the reflux disorder, however most children are treated with antibiotics.

Common for Infants and Older Kids

Almost half of the babies and approximately 30% of children diagnosed with UTI infections will also have reflux.

When urine back-flows to the kidneys during a urinary tract infection, this can cause damage to the kidneys and make your child very ill. If you notice your child:

  • goes to the bathroom more often
  • mentions a burning feeling or "It hurts" when urinating
  • Stomach aches / hurts
  • Has a fever

Make sure your child is seen by their doctor for a urine culture test for UTI confirmation.

X-ray Image Studies

A urine culture should always be done and most doctors will also order x-rays to look for reflux.

Imaging studies provide pictures of the kidneys which will help to see the size and shape of the kidneys and identify any abnormalities.
